This post is part of a campaign with Shutterfly and LooksiSquare. All opinions are entirely my own.
With graduation season just around the corner, this is the perfect time to start planning your graduation party and making decor like this free and easy DIY Gold Foil Graduation Photo Banner. The inspiration for this banner came from Shutterfly’s new graduation invitations and announcements. If you haven’t seen them yet, get ready because they are gorgeous. I was particularly inspired by some gold foil beauties when I designed this banner. More on that later.
You need just a few supplies to make your own banner
- 8.5×11″ cardstock or matte photo paper (my favorite).
- Single hole punch
- 5×7″ photo
- Gold Foil Graduation Banner, downloaded and printed. ***UPDATE: A new Gold Foil Graduation Banner in White is also available now!
First, print your free Gold Foil Graduation Banner if you haven’t yet (the link is above). Keep in mind, this is a faux gold foil. Your printer will not actually print foil, but it will look like gold foil when you are done!
Cut out each flag of your banner. Each flag is exactly 5×7″, so it works perfectly with 5×7″ photos like this gorgeous senior portrait I’m using from my photographer friend Seng of www.sengerson.com. If you are in the Kansas City area, she is pretty awesome and the sweetest. Book a session with her. You won’t regret it!
Once your flags are all cut out, flip your photo over, line up the corners and use a pencil to trace out the notch using one of the flags as a template. Then cut that notch out.
Take your single hole punch and punch a hole in the corner of each flag. I’ve had a small green-handled hole punch for forever, but you can find similar punches at any hobby store with the craft punches. Or in a pinch, you can use a paper hole punch from an office supply store. The hole will be bigger, but if you are using ribbon instead of thin twine, bigger may be better, right? 😉
Now string your banner together with some twine or ribbon. I used gold twine here. You can add as much or as little space as you like. Once you get them spaced how you want them (I did about ½” here), a small piece of tape on the back over the twine keeps the flags from moving around. You can customize it even more by adding one photo on both ends of the banner or multiple photos for an even longer banner. Have fun personalizing it!
And finally, admire your finished product! Hang with washi tape, from Command Hooks or from/on anything you like.
Below is one of the graduation announcements from Shutterfly that inspired my faux gold foil banner. Gold foil is so hot right now!
And, this Gold Stripes Graduation Invitation is gorgeous! Though you can order any type of trim, this scallop trim is so whimsical and the pearl paper is beautiful with the faux foil.
I also love this foil-stamped Simple Class Collage Graduation Announcement. The bracket trim adds that extra something, plus you can choose from three colors of foil to match your school colors. And, the collage is perfect when you can’t decide on just one photo!
The stripes and foil stamping on this Shining So Brightly Graduation Invitation are the perfect match.
This Timeless Tassel Graduation Announcement is so fun! And the colors are fully customizable to your school colors!
The My Year To Shine Graduation Announcement is customizable to your school colors, and you can choose from metallic silver or gold. I like gold for the win!
This Fun Type Celebration Graduation Invitation is amazing. I love the hand lettering and beautiful type!
You have so many options with Shutterfly. You can choose your school colors from a custom color palette, choose foil-stamped designs and pick from different formats (flat, ¾ fold, tri-fold) and card sizes (6×8, 5×7, 4×8, 5×5, 4×5). You can also customize it further with different trim shapes (such as square, rounded, bracket, ticket & scallop) and easily import your favorite pics from Instagram as an added bonus.
The only tough part is deciding which style to pick because they are all awesome! Which design is your favorite?
***UPDATE: You can now download a version of the banner on a white background rather than the black background. Download your Gold Foil Graduation Banner in White for another fun option!
