Hawaiian Luau Party Ideas + A FREE Luau Banner

Nothing screams “Summer” to me like a Hawaiian Luau with leis, straw hats, fresh tropical fruit, yummy BBQ and lots of fun. It is one of my favorite themes!

When I was a teenager my dad was stationed temporarily on Oahu, and I was lucky to fly out with him and spend two fun-filled weeks there. He had an apartment just a couple of blocks from the beach, and it was heaven. I haven’t been back to Hawaii since, but I’ve never forgotten drinking fresh guava juice, eating macadamia nuts, luaus and hula dancing!

So when it came time to start planning this luau, my first stop was U.S. Toy for everything I need!

You know I love anything retro, and I fell for the Pineapple Punch party supplies at U.S. Toy right away. I love the colors and the retro illustrations of pineapples, hibiscus flowers and more. I picked out dinner and dessert plates, as well as dinner and beverage napkins, and they set the tone for everything else!

When I was in my local store, I picked up a Raffia Table Skirt to jazz up my table. I dismantled a few leis, restrung them on some twine and made a DIY flower bunting for the front of the table. It was so easy!

I placed an old crate on one side of the table so guests could grab some more leis, along with a tiki figure from U.S. Toy and a few colorful lanterns on the other side to bring some balance.

A couple of tiki torches from the garden suspend a Tiki Luau Banner (free download below!).  A couple of Hibiscus Flower Hair Clips from U.S.Toy add an extra punch of color and some dimension to the banner.

To cool off our guests, I served up some homemade Piña Colada Smoothies in Plastic Coconut Cups with Cocktail Parasols and some Funny Straws.

A frozen drink just isn’t the same without those umbrellas!

When deciding on the food, there was no doubt some Hawaiian BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders needed to be on the menu. A trip to World market helped with the rest of the menu—they have a great selection of Hawaiian foods. I picked up a bag of Sweet Maui Onion Rings, Luau BBQ Potato Chips, and two kinds of macadamia nuts there.

My kids love popcorn, so I whipped up a batch of homemade Chocolate Coconut Macadamia Nut Popcorn and served it in these cute Tiki Treat Boxes from my friends at Piggy Bank Parties. I used those macadamia nuts (salted and chocolate covered) and combined them with melted chocolate and coconut to make a really yummy treat. The treat boxes were so easy to print and put together. And, I’m pretty sure anything tastes better when served in a cute treat box!

The mother of my daughter’s BFF makes yummy cakes, and she made me a simple buttercream cake that I topped with a few Guylian Belgian Chocolate Seashells to go with a our beachy theme. I also served some fresh fruit.

To set the mood for a fun luau from the beginning, our guests were given their choice of Leis, Tiki Man Pendant NecklacesBeachcomber Hats and Fedoras. The leis came in a buckets of 25 and in several different colors, and the necklaces come in a pack of 12 and are also in several colors. The kids loved them, and the costumes made great party favors post party!

The girls just couldn’t resist dancing right away!

When they tired of hula dancing, games outside provided lots of entertainment. The kids loved playing with the Luau Beanbag Toss game from U.S. Toy. It was just sooooo exhausting watching them run around while sipping on Piña Coladas on the patio.

I also inflated a bunch of Beach Balls. Kids love kicking them around and making up their own games. These 20″ ones were huge and so much fun.
